The Dream Rangers

A story of dogs helping children in their dreams

Review from Ingrid A. Spies

Review of The New Cadets.

With dog heroes, adventure, excitement and intrigue all mixed up with the best of human values, this book is a fascinating kaleidoscope both for children and adults. .

Marjorie Burns’ magical descriptions of the nine canines bring each character to life in such an endearing way that the reader feels a big sense of loss as the book ends. While the story inspired me to read more, I was struck by the skillfully embedded lessons it contained regarding the practices of compassion, kindness, empathy, trustworthiness and hard work . How valuable these themes will be to our children of today troubled as they are by such uncertain times. The moral thrust of the book is significant, mixed with an underlying sense of fun and humor. Marjorie Burns’ unusual skill with words puts all in perspective.

The delightful black and white illustrations of Carolyn Wilhelm are reminiscent of those in books by A. A. Milne, adding, similarly, unique energy and freshness to a remarkably imaginative story.

As you can probably tell, I thoroughly recommend this book.
